Resonance: A Gathering

Are you an artist? A church member who loves the arts? A pastor longing to engage the artists among you? Are the church and her artists pointing to the same thing? This gathering explores how artists and the church need one another to bear fuller witness to the truth, goodness, and beauty of God.

This two day gathering is indebted to Hartmut Rosa’s theory of resonance. Rosa argues that resonance occurs when we are genuinely touched, called, or moved from the outside, whether by a piece of music, words spoken over us, or an encounter with another person. Yet resonance requires us to relinquish control. When we grasp for control, we experience a “catastrophe of resonance”: the world goes mute and recedes from us, leaving us profoundly alienated. Both the artist and the Church are seeking resonance insofar as they recognize the giftedness of reality and understand their role is not mastery but stewardship.

Over an evening and a morning, we will gather around poetry, visual art, music, lectures, conversation, and hospitality, listening for what resonates. Through the art and ideas of John Van Deusen, Mischa Willett, Joe Day, Jeffrey Bilbro, Andrew Hendrixson, and Stephen Proctor, we’ll discover each of our roles in God’s creation as stewards, not masters.

Presented to you by Harbor Anglican Church and hosted at Adoration House.
